Everyone who has had science in the 7th grade has had the pleasure of making ice cream in a bag. We had a class called “Dairy Delights” and talked about the value of calcium for our bodies. We explored how much milk and/or milk products each student has eaten/drank in a day and brainstormed ways to get 3 cups a day if they weren’t getting that much already. Then the fun really began! With a partner everyone put ingredients for making ice cream into bags. Here is the recipe if you want to do this at home:
In large gallon size heavy duty resealable bag place 1 cup crushed ice and 2 Tablespoons salt.
In pint-size heavy duty resealable bag place ½ cup whole milk, 1 Tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract and seal the bag.
Place the small bag inside of the large bag.
Shake the bag for at least 5 minutes or until the milk turns into ice cream. Use paper towels or dishtowels to hold the bags, which can become very cold. For really firm ice cream, pack the bag in ice and put the bag in a cooler for about 10 minutes.
Open and enjoy the ice cream.
